Music and Memories

It amazes me the power that music has on our souls. As I was riding to work this morning I listened to the new Mumford & Sons album. I was amazed at how relaxing their music was. As I got closer to work one of the bonus tracks came on. Immediately it sent chills down my spine. Memories came swarming in and I literally pulled over to enjoy the rest of the song before going to work.
See, when I was young, my dad and I would drive down to Georgia and Florida every summer. 9-12 hours on the road just me and him. He would listen to Simon and Garfunkel the ENTIRE trip most times. Back then I thought it was annoying. Now that I'm older I appreciate EVERYTHING about those trips. The long scenic routes he would take to see the farmland and acres of green grass. The long twisting roads that never seemed to end.
All of those memories came back to me this morning as "The Boxer" came over my radio speakers. Mumford & Sons remade this song but they were able to keep the "feeling" of the song alive. For those few minutes this morning I was riding along the long country roads with my Daddy, headed to see my Grandma and taste her fried okra and peach cobbler. For those few minutes I was young again. I was able to feel a spark in my heart that I haven't felt in a long time.
We cannot hold onto moments forever, nor can we keep memories vivid in our minds. But music can help us enjoy those memories and moments that we just can't live without.
I hope you take a moment to enjoy the video I attached. It is the best I could find on the internet.
What song plays to your heart?

  1. I seldom find a person that music affects as much as myself. Ever since childhood I have been a very artistic person from drawing, to playing instruments, music, painting, writing; anything that allowed me to be creative really. As an adult I find I have far less time to enjoy those same things yet sitting and painting ceramics is still one of my all time favorite things to do on a Sunday afternoon. It's something I always did with my grandmother before she passed. Music touches me in many of the same ways as just passing by paintbrushes or crafts in the store. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and suddenly I'm bombarded with memories or feelings. Almost like I can feel the music. Only music can make an awful day better for me or help me make sense out of an argument I just had with a loved one... It really is all about the simple things in life and we all are guilty of forgetting that from time to time. :o)

  3. Great post! I just had this conversation with my kids! How I long to get in the car with my parents again! Embrace their youth and enjoy! How annoyed I was with family trips as a child...now to only wish I had not been so careless with those precious times! There are so many songs that get me and take me back! Thanks for this though provoking post!
