Hello everyone!!! Ya'll know that I just recently started baby girl on food. Well, hubby and I were at Wal-Mart this weekend and found a food mill thingy(yes, I said thingy) for only FIVE dollars! That's right. It is normally $18, but they had them on the end of the aisle for $5 so we snatched one up.

This is the thingy I speak of.

I decided why not make our own for cheaper? So I went to the grocery store and bought two normal size sweet potatoes. I cut off the ends, washed them off, and wrapped aluminum foil around them. Place them in the oven for about an hour at 400, or until they are nice and mushy.

| The bottom right picture shows you how mushy it should be after cooking. |
Next you spoon (or in our case we forked) the sweet potato into the food mill thingy. You don't want to put too much in at once because you won't be able to put it together. Once the taters are in and you've got all three pieces together you then press down and spin the handle like so....(see picture below)
Once you start to spin the handle your food will come up and out. You spoon it into your container as you go. You can use an ice tray for smaller portions. We used small Tupperware containers for ours. Make sure to only put in one serving to each container so you don't waste any.
Once you've filled your containers, throw them in the freezer. When you're ready to feed baby you can throw it in the microwave or let it thaw out and then warm it in the microwave. Make sure you stir and TEST the food to make sure it isn't too hot. You don't want to burn baby. I made 8 large servings of baby food for less than $1.50.

| Baby food on left and right are almost the same price!!! I think I like the option on the right! |
It's pretty simple, and a lot cheaper too. It is also good to know what is going into baby's tummy. You can use this little nifty contraption with just about anything. Next I will try a Crockpot Applesauce for baby. I'll be sure to post that too! As always, thanks for reading!
We made all our food for our little guy. It not only saved us money but it was so much better for him. I hope you have as much fun as I did.
ReplyDeleteI always make my own baby food, I find it not only cheaper but also an easier way to look out for allergies and to avoid things like salt, sugar and preservatives. Similar to your thingy, I have a lil rocket blender that does the trick :)
ReplyDeleteMmm sweet potato, always a winner isn't it? x
I made all my sons baby food! Check out www.wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com!! It has a load of amazing recipes and ideas for baby foods! It takes you through all the stages and gives what reactions to watch for allergies! I loved it...it was like my baby food bible!
ReplyDeleteI've made almost all of the food for my baby boy. Isn't it crazy how much money you can save? It can be alot of work, I do mine in super large batches (like 5 lbs at a time), then freeze - it's probably a good idea to use a blender tho if you do large quantities. Have fun making food, and creating tasty combos!
ReplyDeleteWe made all the baby food for both our kids. Not only was it better for them, tasty and less money... it was also so fun!
